11 Hilarious April Fools Office Pranks (That Won’t Get You Fired)

Updated March 2026

Let’s be honest, life is stressful. April 1st is one of the only days a year where you’re allowed to let loose and have a little fun with some April Fools Office Pranks. The pranking tradition is globally celebrated, with the first correlation between foolishness and the date April 1st in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, written in the late 1300’s. The holiday is even more fun if it lands during the work week (co-workers beware!).

Here’s our picks of some of the funniest yet harmless April Fools Office Pranks to pull at your office.

1. The Upside-Down Screen

On many computers, a quick keyboard shortcut can rotate the screen upside down. Walk by a colleague’s desk, flip their display, and enjoy watching them try to figure out what just happened.

On windows computers:use Ctrl + Alt + Arrow Keys to rotate the screen instantly. To fix it, press Ctrl + Alt + Up arrow to return to normal.

Mac computers are a little less speedy, you’ll need to go to System Settings > Displays, hold down the Option + Command keys, and then click “Displays” to reveal a hidden “Rotation” menu.

2. The Blue Screen of Death

The blue screen of death, or BSOD, is one of the most feared errors in Windows history. It can be downloaded, ironically, from the Windows website. We’ll just leave this here.

3. You’re Muted!

Make your morning Zoom call a little lighter today! Team up with other colleagues and tell your boss repeatedly that they are on mute. Watch them squirm while they try to sort out their audio.

4. Blackout

This one’s easy. Turn the contrast all the way down on their monitor so it’s just a black screen. No downloads needed! Easily pranked and remedied.

5. System Preferences

For any MacBook users out there, you’ll likely have your trackpad and wireless mouse set on just the right settings. Simply go into your beloved co-worker’s System Preferences and switch the scroll settings to the opposite of their usual settings.

6. Decaf

Now, I love my morning cup(s) of coffee when I get to the office. I would be downright OUTRAGED if someone replaced my regular brew with the Devil’s grinds. Proceed with caution…

7. Don’t Be Jelly

This one is a little more pre-meditative. Swipe some desk supplies from your co-worker and let them set in a Jell-O mold at least a few hours, or possibly overnight. Pro-tip: spray your mold (or bowl) with cooking spray before pouring in the liquid. At least you and your victim can enjoy a morning snack while they attempt to recover their Swingline!

8.  Bilingual

While co-workers are away, sneak into their offices and change their language preferences on Google’s homepage. Choose from languages like Pirate, Elmer Fudd, Esperanto, and Klingon.

9. The Screenshot Trick

Take a screenshot of your co-worker’s desktop, set it as their background, and then move all their real icons into a hidden folder. When they try to click their icons, nothing will happen, and confusion will quickly follow.

10. Balloon Desk

If you have a little time before your co-worker arrives, fill their cubicle or office chair area with balloons. It’s harmless, colorful, and guaranteed to get a laugh when they walk in.

11. The Auto-Correct Prank

If you have access to someone’s word processor settings, add a harmless auto-correct rule—for example, changing “the” to “teh” or replacing their name with something silly.

We hope you have a little fun around the office today. If you try any of these office pranks for April Fools Day, drop us a line and let us know how it goes down!
